ترکیه روز یکشنبه ۲۱ اردیبهشت هشدار داد اگر نیروهای خلیفه حفتر به اماکن دیپلماتیک و منافع ترکیه در لیبی حمله کند، مواضع آنها را هدف قرار خواهد داد. ترکیه حامی دولت مورد حمایت سازمان ملل در لیبی است و با این دولت پیمان نظامی امضا کرده است. نیروهای حفتر که مورد حمایت امارات، مصر و روسیه هستند، بخش‌های وسیعی از کشور را تحت کنترل دارند. ترکیه می‌گوید اگر نیروهای حفتر به اماکن دیپلماتیک و منافع ترکیه حمله کنند، حق مشروع دارد تا مواضع آنها را هدف قرار دهد. این کشور از سازمان ملل خواسته که در مقابل حملات نیروهای حفتر سکوت نکند. دولت آنکارا همچنین کشورهایی را که به نیروهای حفتر سلاح و پول می‌دهند مسئول هرج و مرج در لیبی و بدتر شدن شرایط مردم عنوان کرده و حمله نیروهای حفتر به فرودگاه طرابلس در روز شنبه را «مصداق جنایت جنگی» نامیده است. ترکیه و ایتالیا روز پنج‌شنبه اعلام کردند اطراف سفارتخانه‌هایشان در طرابلس بمباران شده است. نیروهای حفتر بیش از یک سال است تلاش می‌کنند کل لیبی، از جمله طرابلس، پایتخت کشور، را تحت کنترل خود درآورند. سازمان ملل می‌گوید نیروهای حفتر مسئول کشته شدن ۸۰ درصد از ۱۳۰ نفری است که طی سه ماهه اول سال جاری در تنش‌های لیبی کشته شدند.
